Primitive Black Check Valance for Country Houses

In October 1985, Mike and Norma Delano founded The Country House in Snow Hill, Maryland. Mike was a former agricultural fertilizer salesman, while Norma was a second-grade teacher who quit teaching in 1972 to be a stay-at-home mom to their daughters, Christy and Jenny. As the girls grew older, Norma's interest in painting and sewing crafts increased, and she and Mike began participating in craft shows each year. The idea of opening a store to showcase their handmade products and decorative items not readily available in the area led them to establish The Country House.

Due to the overwhelming response at the Snow Hill store, the Delanos decided to move to a larger location in Salisbury, Maryland. After a year, they doubled the store's size to 5,000 square feet. Three years later, they purchased their current 48,000-square-foot building, which had originally been built in the 1930s as a shirt factory and required extensive renovations. The Delano family, including the grandparents, and several carpenter friends worked diligently to prepare the space for the store.

In the early 2000s, The Country House Collection had the opportunity to develop a line of fabric curtains and linens, which were manufactured in India. Christy and Jenny collaborated with Norma and Mike to build this collection, which has since expanded to include a broad selection of metal pieces and other household goods.
