In October 1985, Norma and Mike Delano opened The Country House in Snow Hill, Maryland. Mike was a former agricultural fertilizer salesman, while Norma had been a second-grade teacher. However, in 1972, Norma quit teaching to become a stay-at-home mom for her daughters, Christy and Jenny. As the girls grew older, Norma's interests shifted towards painting and sewing crafts, which she and Mike would showcase at annual craft shows.

The idea of opening a store to display their handmade products and decorative items not readily available in the local area came to fruition when they established The Country House in Snow Hill. The store's initial success led them to move to a larger space in Salisbury, Maryland, and within a year, they had doubled the size of that location to 5,000 square feet. After three years, they purchased their current 48,000 square-foot building, which had previously been a shirt factory in the 1930s and required significant renovations. The Delano family, including grandparents and several carpenter friends, put in a lot of work to prepare the building for its new purpose as a store.

In the early 2000s, The Country House Collection had the opportunity to develop a line of fabric curtains and linens, which were produced in India. Christy and Jenny, along with Norma and Mike, collaborated to build this collection, which has since expanded to include a wide selection of metal pieces and other household goods.
